As August leaves us and enters into September, you may think about cool fall days. Those of us who live in areas that are lucky enough to experience it are looking forward to the color change of the trees and the crisp autumn air. I can’t wait for my Iced Apple Crisp Oatmilk Espresso from Starbucks, scary movies and other spooky activities.
Unfortunately, autumn lovers may have some waiting to do because some warmer days are still in the forecast. That means wearing sunscreen and taking proper precautions in the sunny weather. Sometimes you just don’t prepare yourself and you still get burned.
If you find yourself caught in the sun and dealing with a sunburn, you might be looking for a treatment that will work. Aloe vera gel has been the go-to treatment for years, but some of the drawbacks are that it can irritate skin and cause hives in people who are sensitive to it. It can also make skin feel tight or sticky, which may be unpleasant.
Apollo’s Apothecary Oil is a fantastic alternative to aloe vera gel in the treatment of sunburns. It doesn’t leave a sticky residue and it soaks into chapped damaged skin quickly. The oil is formulated to not only reduce pain and inflammation associated with sunburns but it also contains ingredients that help treat and soothe it.
Let’s take a look at which ingredients are helpful and why they are so effective:
Chamomile
Chamomile tea has anti-inflammatory properties that can alleviate sunburn. People often brew it as a soothing drink to help soothe their bodies, but the cooled tea bags or a washcloth soaked in chamomile tea can be used directly on a sunburned area.
Lavender
Lavender is another anti-inflammatory. People generally use lavender essential oil to reduce redness and swelling and apply it directly to the sunburned area. We don’t use essential oil in Apollo’s Apothecary Oil. Instead, we infuse our oil directly with organic lavender herbs.
Turmeric Root
Turmeric is both an antioxidant and antibacterial, which supports skin repair and rejuvenation. It inhibits the immune response that leads to skin inflammation. It also had natural anti-inflammatory properties. Studies suggest that turmeric can help reduce skin damage caused by UV radiation. Turmeric also deeply hydrates and revitalizes skin while alleviating symptoms of dryness, because it naturally speeds up the process of removing dead skin cells.
Calendula
Calendula calms inflamed and irritated skin. It tones the capillaries to encourage local healing. It is also an antimicrobial. Professional homeopaths often recommend using ointments that contain calendula to heal first-degree burns and sunburns. Calendula can help burns, bruises, and cuts heal faster, and fight minor infections. It can also help wounds heal faster and may increase blood flow to the wounded area by helping the body make new tissue.
Ginger Root
Ginger root can reduce inflammation and help heal ultraviolet (UV) skin damage. It contains antioxidants, which help protect against environmental aggressors such as UV rays, free radicals, pollution, and harsh climate conditions, which can damage the skin barrier. Ginger’s anti-inflammatory properties soothe irritated skin (sunburn, eczema, psoriasis, and inflamed acne) and can reduce roughness.
